Bike Set Up with John Phelan The Bikefit Physio

Biography of John Phelan The BikeFit Physio:

I qualified as a chartered physiotherapist with a MSc from Leeds University in January 2009 and it was straight up to Glasgow to work with the NHS for the following 5 years. The NHS was a fantastic opportunity to get experience in every area of physio before concentrating on musculoskeletal outpatients.

I moved into private practice whilst living in Edinburgh and then started the journey of running my own clinic on returning home to Ireland in February 2016.

The private practice is called Life Fit Physio and is located at the Life Fit Studio in upper Ballygarvan. One of my areas of interest is in physio-led bike fitting. This is something I have really concentrated on over the past five years. I’ve attended many courses and invested in evidence-based technology, such as the GebioMized saddle pressure mapping system and bike fit software in order to bring my physio bike fitting service to a high level. This service goes under The Bike Fit Physio title.

I have a special interest in low back pain management, tendinopathy management, shoulder rehab, pain science, running gait analysis and running injury treatment and prevention. I completed a BSc in Nutrition from UCC in 2004 and offer a nutritional advice service to tie in with the bike and running assessment clinics. Currently using the PNOE portable metabolic gas analysis device to identify patient’s resting metabolic rate and other valuable measurements. This information is used
to steer nutrition consultations and training plans in the appropriate direction.

Another role of mine is senior physio to the Irish Masters national hockey teams.

I get my kicks from adventure racing and being a Dad, but relax with home-brewing and meditation!
